Overview
SUNY Oneonta's 150-hour Professional Accounting program provides students with the analytical tools and decision-making ability needed to pursue a variety of careers in the accounting profession. The program is registered with the New York State Education Department to meet the curriculum requirements for the Uniform Certified Public Accounting Examination. An optional concentration in Marketing is also available.

Small Classes
All advanced courses and most introductory courses are taught by full-time faculty whose focus is on accounting and law. Class sizes are small. Advanced courses average 15-20 students. Introductory courses average 35-45 students.

Hands-On Learning
Qualified accounting majors have the opportunity to obtain practical work experience by completing an internship between the junior and senior years. A select group of upper-level students serve as tutors and faculty assistants. Computer applications in accounting are taught in several courses.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
You’ll have the opportunity to become certified by the Internal Revenue Service to help Oneonta-area families prepare simple tax forms through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Students get hands-on experience and give back to the local community by helping taxpayers fill out federal and state tax forms and determine whether they qualify for special credits.

Backpacks to Briefcases
Every year, business students travel to New York City to network with alumni in the business and financial industries.

Facilities
Eight Bloomberg terminals provide access to economic and financial data. Students can earn Bloomberg Market Concept certification.

Accounting Society
The Accounting Society student club focuses on helping students prepare to get jobs in their field after graduation. Activities include sharing information about the timeline for resume gathering, firms to which resumes can be sent and a calendar of recruiting events. The Society also hosts alumni who come to campus to offer career advice and interview students for internships and permanent positions at top accounting firms.
Student Achievements
Oneonta accounting majors have successfully passed the CPA exams with higher than the average passing rates of students in the accounting programs in New York state. Professional Accounting students have been recognized by the New York State Society of CPAs with outstanding student awards in accounting, auditing and taxation.
Professional Licensure
This program satisfies the educational requirements required for licensure in New York State only. Individuals interested in this program who do not reside in NY State but are planning to seek employment in NY State may be eligible for admission to this program.
