Overview

Economics is a discipline that lies at the intersection of business and the liberal arts. Economics majors at SUNY Oneonta may choose to add a Finance Concentration; obtain a microcredential in Economic and Financial Applications; or pursue curricular paths in areas such as international economics, environmental and natural resource economics, macroeconomic policy, sports economics, and data analytics.

What You’ll Learn

As an Economics major, you will:

  • Develop the analytical, written, oral and presentation skills necessary for postgraduate employment, graduate education and civic engagement;
  • Learn the economic methods used to analyze contemporary issues in the international economics, applied microeconomics and applied macroeconomics;
  • While mentored by a faculty member in the capstone course, apply these skills to an independent research project.

Faculty Connections

Our faculty have teaching and research expertise in areas including international trade and development; labor, health, sports and environmental economics; macroeconomics; economic history; and econometrics/data analytics. Our upper-division classes are small and provide numerous opportunities for student-faculty interaction.

Hands-On Learning

In your capstone senior seminar, you’ll do an independent research project under the direction of a faculty member. You’ll also have opportunities to showcase your work  at events such as the SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference and the New York State Economics Association’s student paper competition. You can receive course credit for an internships, including our in-house paid internship for the Sustainable Development Goals Speaker Series. 

Students participate in the Federal Reserve Challenge

Federal Reserve Challenge

Every year, students participate in the annual College Federal Reserve Challenge, an intercollegiate monetary policy competition inspired by the policy-making role of the Federal Reserve System’s Federal Open Market Committee. Students prepare a presentation as a team for the competition and answer monetary policy questions from judges. SUNY Oneonta teams have reached the semifinals and won honorable mention awards in recent years.

Eight Bloomberg terminals provide access to economic and financial data. Students can earn Bloomberg Market Concept certification.
