Biology & Geology 333 Summer Field Course

Hands-On Learning

You’ll get many opportunities to practice your skills outside of the classroom, including independent research, faculty-led field courses in the western United States and travel to geology conferences. New freshmen and transfer students have the chance to develop field skills before the semester even begins, through GEOFYRST, a unique, six-day, pre-semester camping trip exploring the geology of New York and the Northeast.

Ground Penetrating Radar class with Leigh Fall, Associate Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences

Equipment

You’ll have access to specialized equipment during your labs and field experiences, including a scanning electron microscope with magnification up to 60,000x, ground-penetrating radar, mapping drones, a reflectorless total station, gamma-ray spectrometer and CHIRP sonar and boat.

Licensure

The courses within the major are approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to prepare you for professional geology licensure in the state of New York. Once you graduate with a BS in Geology, you will be qualified to take the first of two professional exams. The second examination occurs after obtaining work experience. With a license, you may expect to receive advantages such as job preference and higher salaries.

This program satisfies the educational requirements required for licensure in New York State only. If you do not live in New York State but are planning to seek employment in New York after graduation, you may be eligible for admission to this program.
