Overview
At SUNY Oneonta, Meteorology majors do a lot more than weather prediction! We have incredible undergraduate research opportunities, a variety of climate courses, and small class sizes, so students get to know each other. You'll get lots of one-on-one time with faculty and meet students who are at different stages in their degree and can show you the ropes. You’ll leave Oneonta prepared to enter the world as a true scientist.

Leave Oneonta Career-Ready
Our program prepares students for careers in both the private and public sectors, where a growing awareness of environmental problems is creating increased opportunities for graduates with atmospheric expertise. All majors graduate with transcripts that meet American Meteorological Society (AMS) standards for federal government jobs in meteorology and the coursework requirements for broadcast meteorology certification.
Facilities
You’ll get hands-on experience with radar and satellite imagery, upper air analysis, surface weather maps and meteorological observations. Oneonta’s meteorology facilities include:
- Linux computing lab
- Student laptop lab with programming/GIS capabilities
- Weather balloon/radiosonde sounding system (students learn how to launch on the roof)
- Skylab, an indoor sky and cloud observing room with a panoramic view of the Upper Susquehanna Valley, a large workspace table for spreading out maps and charts, and an interactive touchscreen panel
- Student-led daily online and TV forecasting opportunities
- Large green screen wall with TV equipment
- Dedicated lab room for meteorology classes
- Rooftop weather station with a rare dataset of daily observations dating back to 1981
Career Opportunities
Our meteorology majors go on to top grad schools, get jobs in government agencies, or work with private forecasting companies and TV stations. Here’s a sampling of alumni careers.

Hands-On Learning
Oneonta meteorology students publish research in professional journals, receive national scholarships, land Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) opportunities, and travel to conferences to present their findings. Students have done internships with the National Weather Service, Department of Environmental Conservation, private companies, and TV stations. Our Meteorology Club that organizes trips and other events.

Research Focus
Our faculty have a long tradition of including students in their research or developing new lines of research to align with student interest, and then presenting at regional, national and international conferences. Examples of student research topics include unusual-tracking tornadoes, hurricane track changes related to global warming, building snowstorm climatologies for the Northeast, and even how weather impacts baseball game delays/cancellations.
