Why Oneonta?

SUNY Oneonta’s program is distinctive for two reasons: our long track record of success in training teachers, and our commitment to hands-on learning. From designing garments for our annual Student Fashion Show, to providing hospitality at benefit dinners and golf tournaments, our students get many opportunities to develop their skills in real-world settings.

Why Family and Consumer Sciences?

Family and Consumer Sciences is an important discipline because it helps middle and high school students develop valuable life skills, ranging from cooking a nutritious meal to managing their finances. Students are also introduced to career possibilities in a variety of fields.

In New York state, a high percentage of FCS teachers are expected to retire in the next fi ve years, and there is a documented shortage of FCS educators across the nation. This means there is a growing, urgent need to find students interested in entering the Family and Consumer Sciences profession, to help school districts fill teaching positions and keep this important discipline going strong.

Hands-On Learning

FCS majors get plenty of opportunities to learn by doing, and to practice their teaching skills. Many classes have hands-on activities such as sewing, cooking and event planning. Students also practice giving demonstrations to peers in each of their classes. Outside of the classroom, several student-run clubs offer hands-on experience for students interested in secondary education, fashion, nutrition and child development.

Practical Experience

Field experience in local schools offers additional real-world preparation. Every Adolescence Education FCS course requires 6–10 hours of field work observations. These observations help students prepare for student-teaching placements in their senior year.
