What You’ll Learn
SUNY Oneonta’s Exercise Science program is designed for students interested in all aspects of human movement and will prepare you to work in a wide variety of health care and fitness related fields. The major focuses on numerous applications kinesiology (the scientific study of human movement), such as psychology, physiology, biomechanics, human development, motor learning, nutrition, fitness assessment and program design.

4+3 DPT with Upstate Medical
Are you interested in becoming a physical therapist? Our 4+3 DPT agreement with Upstate Medical offers early assurance for high school seniors to Upstate Medical's Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. You will complete four years of study at SUNY Oneonta (Exercise Science–Health Professions Concentration Major) and 2.5 years of study at Upstate.

Pre-Health Professions
Students interested in pre-health professions such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, and physician’s assistant may major in Exercise Science as well as completing the requirements for their specific graduate school pre-health emphasis. Pre-health students work closely with their academic advisor as well as the pre-health advisor, who is an expert in helping prepare students for graduate school admission.

Fitness-Related Professions
Exercise Science prepares students for careers in fitness, strength and conditioning, personal training, coaching and other professions. Students interested in these fields often minor in business, sport management or athletic coaching. You’ll also be eligible to sit for Certified Personal Training and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist exams offered by national professional organizations

Hands-On Learning
Using data and knowledge bases from various populations, Exercise Science majors develop skills and design personalized fitness programs for “clients” to help them reach their personal fitness or rehabilitation goals. This work is part of the capstone courses that you’ll take during the final semesters of your degree.

Required Internship
You’ll get additional real-world experience through a required internship during your third or fourth year. Students have completed internships in a variety of settings, including physical therapy or occupational therapy offices, fitness centers, summer camps, athletic training departments and health education programs.

Facilities
Reserved for use by Exercise Science majors, our Exercise Science lab has a metabolic cart with treadmill, composition analyzer ECG, stationary bike and other equipment that you’ll use in labs. You’ll also have access to a variety of fitness facilities, including gymnasiums, dance studios, a pool, fitness centers, free weight space, indoor and outdoor tracks and miles of hiking and biking trails at our College Camp facility adjacent to campus.

Exercise Science Initiative Connects Campus and Community
Forty-three SUNY Oneonta students traded the classroom for real-world, firsthand experience in motor development through a new program called Developing Red Dragons.
